History of the MSM Group of Companies

In 1989, MSM Transportation Inc. was born when three young entrepreneurs Bob Murray, Elden Sammut and Mike McCarron opened a transportation brokerage company that specialized in the movement of LTL shipments between Canada and the United States. . From day one, MSM operated differently that the other load brokers of the time.

• MSM paid every carrier invoice within 21 days from the day the invoice was received
• 90% of MSM’s shipments moved in our distribution system so we rarely had to “shop” shipments around to unknown, unreliable carriers in order to find the best deal of the day or post shipments on the internet to find carriers. This allowed us to provide committed door to door service standards with a 100% money back guarantee. This quality system was quickly registered to the ISO 9002 international quality standard.

These founding principles were the basis of business and had a huge factor in our early success and rapid growth.

In 1994, MSM had outgrown its existing office space at Mid-Continental truck terminal and felt at the time that it was important to establish roots in a smaller community outside of Toronto. In December of that year, MSM purchased a 13,000 square foot warehouse in Brampton, Ontario.

By 1997 MSM was continuing its rapid grow and quickly developing a name as the leading transportation broker in the GTA. Finding it more and more difficult to find reliable carriers to move freight in our system, MSM opened a trucking division that provided an LTL service between Canada and the United States. The growth of MSM Canadian Transport led to the building of MSM Transportation’s new head office on a six acre site (which has since been expanded to 11 acres) in south Bolton.

In 2001, MSM launched an aggressive vertical integration strategy (See below under Business Strategy) and opened up a third division, MSM Dedicated and Tandem Rentals which focused on the contract trucking and trailer storage solutions sector of the industry. Since that time we have also successfully opened up MSM Distribution and purchased the St. Michaels Buzzers OHA Junior “A” Hockey team.

At the present time MSM has grown into a recognized leader in the Canadian Transportation Industry. It has become a multi - million dollar Canadian success story that employs close to 200 people, owns and operates over 300 pieces of equipment and handles over 50,000 shipments per year in its award winning unique dispatch system. Throughout the years, we are proud of the fact that we have grown into a successful Canadian business that has never strayed from the principles upon which the business was founded.
